Bürgenstock [Switzerland], June 21: US Vice President JD Vance on Sunday revealed Donald Trump's message to Iran's leadership, saying that the President had asked him to "turn over a new leaf" and help transform America's relationship with the Iranian people.
Speaking in Bürgenstock ahead of talks, Vance said, "What the President (Donald Trump) has asked us to do is turn over a new leaf to transform our leadership with the people of Iran and to extend an outstretched that says to people of Iran that if your leadership is willing to give up a driver of regional instability, if they are willing to give up nuclear weapon ambitions for the long term then United States is willing to fundamentally transform our relationship with that country."
"That is certainly our goal and we have made great progress over just the last few hours and I expect to make additional progress in the hours to come," he added.
Quadrilateral peace talks between the United States, Iran, Pakistan, and Qatar have officially begun earlier today.
The US delegation is headed by American Vice President. He is joined by White House envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Ahead of talks, Vance delivered optimistic remarks stating the US and Iran had “a lot of work to do” but were “excited to do it.”
Earlier, he also downplayed violence in Lebanon as a potential roadblock to reaching a peace deal. It’s the latest attempt by the US and Iran to get last week’s agreement back on track after strikes between Israel and Lebanon, which led Iranian officials to announce plans to close the Strait of Hormuz.
He said, "What we are trying to accomplish here is very simple through diplomacy, through working together to transform to transform the Middle East where Iran and Gulf have been at war wit each other or at least have had very unfriendly relations where Iran has been a driver of regional instability."
"Now we see a future where everynody can see a future to bring peace and prosperity.... This is a historic meeting. Never before outside of Islamabad and here so outside the last few months never before has the Iranian and American leadership met at such a high level," he added.
Vance appreciated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Aseem Muneer for the mediation between US and Iran.
He said, "I have a few other notes of appreciation first of all Prime Minister of Pakistan, a dear friend of President and dear friend of mine, a guy who has been with his leadership and his very careful and skilled negotiation has got us to this point."
While the discussions are being mediated by Pakistan and Qatar after delays in arranging the meeting. Iran’s delegation is being led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Iran has said its primary objective is to ensure that all sides fully implement the interim agreement aimed at ending the conflict across the region.
