India condemned the attack on the vessel Settebello off Oman, saying 21 Indian crew rescued and 3 remain missing as search operations continue.

New Delhi (India), June 11: India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday condemned the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, calling for immediate de-escalation of tensions in the region.

According to the statement, out of 24 Indian crew members onboard the vessel, 21 have been rescued so far, while three Indians are reported missing. The Embassy of India in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Omani authorities in ongoing search and rescue operations.

The statement also read that continuing attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome and a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict in the area.

"We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, earlier today. Of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 Indians have been rescued thus far, and three Indians are reportedly missing," the ministry said.

"The continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region," the statement said.

"The targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region in keeping with international law must be restored at the earliest," the MEA added.

It reiterated India’s call for immediate de-escalation and urged the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution to restore peace and stability.

The statement added that targeting commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must end, and called for the restoration of free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through international waterways in accordance with international law.

India has also summoned the United States' Charg d’Affaires to lodge a protest in this matter.
