No immediate plan of E25 fuel rollout: Sources

New Delhi [India]: Amid the speculation of a possible rollout of E25 (Ethanol blended) petrol, the sources have said that no such decision has been taken to increase ethanol blending beyond the current E20 level.

The clarification comes amid reports and social media discussions suggesting that India could soon introduce petrol with 25 per cent ethanol blending.

The sources clarified that any future decision to move beyond E20 will be taken only after scientific studies.

The government also sought to reassure consumers over the use of E20 petrol, stating that the fuel has been in use for more than two-and-a-half years after undergoing extensive testing. Sources said there is no reason for motorists to be concerned about the impact of E20 on vehicles.

The clarification comes amid growing debate over the compatibility of ethanol-blended fuel with existing vehicles and claims circulating on social media about higher maintenance costs and engine performance.

The government has promoted ethanol blending to reduce dependence on imported crude oil, support farmers, and move towards cleaner fuel options. India has been working towards higher ethanol blending targets, including the goal of 20% blending in petrol.


Supporters of the Ethanol blendng policy, including Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, Nitin Gadkari argue that it can help reduce fuel import costs and create new opportunities for the agriculture sector.
