New Delhi [India], June 24 : The embassies of the United Kingdom, France and Germany in Taipei have issued a joint statement expressing concern over China’s recent coast guard patrols near Taiwan’s east coast.

The European countries said such activities could increase tensions in the region and have also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

China’s Activities

As China has increased military and maritime activities around Taiwan in recent years, including coast guard operations and military drills. Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to bring the island under its control.

Taiwan, which operates with its own government, military and democratic system has rejected China’s sovereignty claims.

However, The latest patrols near Taiwan’s eastern waters have drawn attention because the area is considered strategically important and is farther from China’s mainland compared to Taiwan’s western coastline.

A Call for Stability

The UK, France and Germany said they support maintaining the status quo and resolving differences peacefully. Their statement highlighted the need to avoid actions that could may lead to an accidental escalation.

However, the move comes as international concerns grow over security in the Indo-Pacific region, where tensions involving China, Taiwan and neighbouring countries continue to rise.
