US trade team to visit New Delhi next week to finalise India deal: Greer

New Delhi: US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has revealed that a US delegation will travel to India next week for further talks, a strong indication of the finalisation of bilateral trade agreement (BTA) between India and US.

Speaking about ongoing discussions with New Delhi, Greer further stated that he may soon meet Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to conclude negotiations.

Greer further stated that both sides have already agreed on a joint framework and are now working towards finalising the deal.

“On New Delhi, we've had many meaningful discussions. We have a framework agreement done with the Indians. I have a team going there next week. I expect to meet with my counterparts soon as well,” Greer said.

Expressing optimism over the negotiations, the US Trade Representative described the potential agreement as “historic” for both countries.

“I would really like to be in a position to finalize our agreement with them as well on the basis of the joint framework we agreed to. It would be historic for the US and India,” he added.

Greer also highlighted the difficulties faced in previous attempts to conclude broader trade agreements involving India and the European Union, noting that comprehensive trade pacts often take years to materialise.

“Just think,  with the US and the EU, we tried to have a trade agreement with them, work out.  EU and India, we've tried several times, didn't work out. So we're trying to do things that have never been done. They're not going to be comprehensive trade agreements, because as we have found, that takes years and can never find full traction.  But we're trying to make concrete movement with these jurisdictions, with these countries. And it's happening,” he said.

The remarks come amid growing efforts by Washington and New Delhi to deepen economic ties and strengthen strategic cooperation across trade, technology and supply chains.

India-US trade deal so far

India and the United States issued a Joint Statement on 7th February 2026, agreeing on a framework for an Interim Agreement regarding reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade.

Both sides are engaged to finalize the details of the Interim Agreement and take forward the negotiations under the broader BTA.

Multiple areas such as Market Access, Non-Tariff Measures, Technical Barriers to Trade, Customs and Trade Facilitation, Investment Promotion, Economic Security Alignment and Digital trade are being discussed.

India has termed the finalisation of terms of trade as "Landmark Trade Victory." As per a datasheet released in February this year, the trade deal will unlock USD 30-trillion U.S. market for exports across key sectors.

The agreement delivers comprehensive tariff rationalisation, zero-duty access across large product categories, enhanced digital and technology cooperation, and a carefully calibrated framework to safeguard India’s farmers, MSMEs and domestic industry.

Trade Figures

With India’s total exports to the United States standing at USD 86.35 billion in 2024, the agreement significantly enhances competitive access across key sectors including textiles, leather, gems and jewellery, agriculture, machinery, home décor, pharmaceuticals, and technology-driven industries, the government has stated.
