Chennai (Tamil Nadu), June 5: While announcing his new political outfit today, Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai appealed to the youth and newer generation to join the movement with the vision of taking Tamil Nadu on the new horizon.

In his video announcement, Annamalai concentrated on the power of Gen Z, youth, women and grassroots politics.

"New political path and a new movement for the Tamil people," said Annamalai after announcing his resignation from BJP.

"We are going to start the movement through http://wetheleaders.org, APJ Abdul Kalam centre for ethics and policy will train our youths for elections."

BJP under Annamalai's leadership

Under Annamalai's leadership, the BJP's vote share in Tamil Nadu rose sharply during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Under his leadership, BJP witnessed a significant increase in support among young voters and women.

BJP's vote share in Tamil Nadu rose sharply during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. According to Kumar, the BJP secured around 11 percent of the vote while the NDA's overall vote share reached nearly 18 percent, a substantial increase from the party's traditional 3-3.5 percent base in the state.

However, BJP's performance declined after internal differences emerged within the state leadership. The party's vote share dropped to around 3 percent in the 2026 Assembly elections despite the BJP's alliance with the AIADMK.

Will BJP Miss Annamalai?

Political analysts believe that Annamalai's resignation will further weaken the BJP's politics in Tamil Nadu. However, the BJP state President has denied that Annamalai’s exit will impact the party.

Despite BJP’s poor performance in the state election, Annamalai continues to enjoy considerable support among young people and social media users.

Political analysts say that Tamil Nadu's political battleground is becoming increasingly competitive, with all major parties attempting to attract younger voters.

Chief Minister Joseph Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the DMK under Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and Annamalai's emerging political platform are all seeking to capture the Gen Z vote.

How it started

The popular BJP leader in the state and former IPS officer Annamalai was in a political dilemma ever since the BJP removed him and appointed Nainar Nagendran as the Tamil Nadu unit president. The BJP, ahead of the recent state elections, revived its alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Political observers say Annamalai’s popularity has been a major factor behind BJP’s growth in Tamil Nadu. The party’s vote share reportedly increased significantly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where BJP contested independently without an alliance.
