New Delhi [India], June 22: British politician, Andy Burnham has confirmed he will seek to become Labour leader and replace Keir Starmer as Prime Minister, following Starmer’s announcement that he will step down.
The Greater Manchester mayor said he would "put myself forward as part of this process," setting up what is expected to be a closely watched leadership contest that could determine the future direction of the Labour Party and the UK government.
Burnham is a British politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Makerfield since 2026. A Labour Co-op member, he was the Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to 2026 and served as the MP for Leigh from 2001 until 2017.
Earlier, after winning the Makerfield by-election, Burnham said, "Everyone knows That politics isn't working. Everyone can feel that the country isn't where it should be. Tonight, Could just could Be the turning point From here on. I will give everything I have got to make it."
In his previous stints at the central politics, Burnham held cabinet positions under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. During his speech, he said that he always knew he would seek to return to Westminster to "complete that unfinished business" so the north of England could fulfil its "potential".
Burnham who is member of the Labour Party and mayor of Greater Manchester questioned Starmer-government for its policies and direction for the economy. Burnham is likely to sworn in as a member of Parliament on Monday.
United Kingdom has seen six Prime Ministers since it quit European Union, the move popularly known as "Brexit."
The outgoing PM's exit comes as Starmer could not deliver promised economic growth, as per the critics. The second reason remains the domestics political and policy missteps. Meanwhile, Starmer came in controversy after the appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK Ambessedor to US who allegedly had relations with the Jeffrey Epstein.
