New Delhi [India], June 22 : UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will resign as the leader of the Labour Party, marking a major political shift in Britain. His resignation comes after growing questions over whether he remains the best person to lead Labour into the next general election.

In a statement, Starmer said he had listened to concerns from his party colleagues and accepted their view.

"I know the question being asked now is, who is best charged to take Labour forward. The question the party is asking is if I am best placed to lead party into the next election...I have heard that answer from my party colleagues, and I accept. Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why will resign as leader of the Labour Party."

Starmer confirmed that he had informed King Charles about his decision.

"I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision. I will ask the Labour National Executive to start the process to ensure a new leader is in place before the next parliament session in September...I will give my successor the full support knowing that they will inherit a stronger Britain to ensure Labour gets a second term. I want to thank all my colleagues for their support," he said.

Reflecting on his personal life after leaving office, Starmer added:

"When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife Vic. And being the best dad I can to my beautiful children who are my pride and joy."

Britain's Leadership Change

The UK is now preparing to appoint its seventh prime minister in just a decade as leadership discussion intensified. The period of political change began after the 2016 Brexit referendum, which was followed by a series of leadership changes including David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

The latest resignation has once again raised questions over political stability in Britain, with Labour now beginning the process of selecting a new leader.

Andy Burnham Emerges as a Key Contender

Speaking on Fox News, Senior Correspondent Benjamin Hall said that the arrival of Andy Burnham in Parliament has significantly changed the leadership race.

Hall said:

"Everyone knew at some point what happened in the last week specifically is this other Labour candidate called Andy Burnham who was the mayor of Manchester finally won a seat in Parliament. He was effectively someone stood down to allow him to do that and he is widely considered to be the next contender."

He added, that Starmer’s political difficulties had been building for months, pointing to policy reversals, poor local election results and controversies surrounding former ambassador appointment decisions.

According to Hall, Starmer faced growing pressure after Labour suffered losses in local elections, particularly against Reform UK, while questions were also raised over former diplomat Peter Mandelson and his links to Jeffrey Epstein.

Leadership Battle

Hall said Burnham is widely expected to become a major contender for Labour leadership and potentially the next Prime Minister.

He said other possible candidates include Wes Streeting, who is also considered a strong figure in the race.

Hall explained that discussions between Burnham and Streeting could shape the contest, with reports suggesting possible agreements over future government roles.

He said Labour faces a difficult choice - either allow candidates to compete openly, risking internal divisions, or unite behind one candidate, which critics may describe as a "coronation" rather than a democratic contest.

Labour to Begin Leadership Process

Starmer said a new leadership contest will begin on July 9, while he will continue serving as Prime Minister until the transition takes place.

The next Prime Minister will be chosen by the Labour Party, as it remains the governing party following its election victory.

The leadership change comes as Britain enters another period of political uncertainty, with questions growing over the country’s political direction and the stability of its governments.

Ends.
