New Delhi [India], June 21: British Prime Minister Sir Keir Rodney Starmer is reportedly preparing to resign as early as Monday, reported news platform The Observer .

Citing its sources, the media outlet claimed that the British PM has been discussing an orderly departure with his cabinet and close advisors as pressure continues to build around his leadership.

The possible leadership change comes amid questions over the future direction of the Labour government, with intensifying internal party discussions.

Andy Burnham, who has been identified as a potential successor, is scheduled to be sworn in as a Member of Parliament on Monday. As his return to Parliament would allow him to formally launch a leadership challenge if he chooses to do so.

However, the situation is yet uncertain. While The Observer first reported claims about Starmer’s possible resignation, Reuters has reported, citing its sources, that Starmer is expected to continue carrying out his duties as Prime Minister.

Three factors behind the leadership speculation

1. Growing pressure within Labour Party

Starmer has faced increasing challenges from within his own party, with some Labour figures raising concerns over government strategy, public support and political messaging. The leadership debate has intensified as the party looks ahead to its future direction.

2. Leadership race speculation

The emergence of Andy Burnham as a possible successor has added momentum to discussions around a leadership transition. His planned return to Parliament has been viewed by some observers as a significant political move.

3. Public and political confidence issues

The speculation comes at a time when the UK government is dealing with questions over policy decisions, economic concerns and voter confidence. Political analysts say leadership stability remains a key issue for Labour.

Expert view on Starmer’s future

Ralph Goodale, former High Commissioner for Canada in the UK, while speaking on Canadian news channel CTV, said that any leadership transition would have major implications for Britain’s political landscape. Goodale highlighted that leadership changes in the UK requires a careful handling because it will not only affect the governing party but is going to also affect the national and international confidence.

While speculation continues, there has been no official confirmation from Downing Street regarding any resignation plans. However, the coming days are expected to clarify, whether Britain is heading toward a leadership contest or whether Starmer will continue leading the government or not.
