New Delhi [India], June 26 : Political circles are witnessing intense speculation over a possible Union Cabinet reshuffle as reports are suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may announce changes as early as Sunday or Monday.
While there is no official confirmation yet, several media reports and sources indicate that Home Minister Amit Shah met President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday and suggested the possible dates for the reshuffle.
However, the focus of the reshuffle appears to be on performance, political representation and strengthening the NDA ahead of upcoming state elections.
Dharmendra Pradhan and Hardeep Exit
Although, the biggest talking point around the reshuffle is the possible removal of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri.
The reports suggest that Pradhan could face action due to the criticism linked to the NEET controversy and allegations surrounding examination irregularities. As the Education Ministry has been under pressure, making his position a key area of speculation.
Hardeep Puri, who's currently handling the Petroleum portfolio, is also being discussed for a possible replacement. Sources indicate that the BJP may look for stronger representation from Punjab especially with upcoming political challenges in the state.
Major Inductions Expected
While several names are being discussed for induction or elevation. Former RBI Governor and former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Shaktikanta Das is reportedly being considered for a full Cabinet berth.
However, while speaking to The Indian Express, a senior BJP functionary said that Shah’s meeting with the President might have been a courtesy call following her recent birthday or part of routine consultations.
“We do expect a Cabinet reshuffle at some stage, but whether the home minister’s meeting with the President was linked to it is not known to us.”
Other possible inclusions include:
Anurag Thakur, who may return with a full Cabinet position
Meerut MP Arun Govil, who could get a ministerial role
Vishnu Datt Sharma and Janardan Singh Sigriwal, whose names are also being discussed
Who will get more Representation ?
The reshuffle may also reward NDA allies. Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde is among the names doing rounds after his role in bringing six Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs closer to the NDA.
The JD(U) could also gain more influence, with speculation around Nitish Kumar taking a possible Cabinet role.
Punjab representation is another area under discussion, with names like Raghav Chadha and Ashok Mittal being mentioned for possible inclusion.
Portfolio Changes
Reports also suggest that major ministries could see changes, including possible shifts involving Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
Around half a dozen Ministers of State are also likely to be dropped as part of the restructuring exercise, according to media reports.
However, the final list will be depending on the Prime Minister’s decision and official announcement from the government.
