How Much Have PM Modi's Foreign Trips Cost Taxpayers in last 5 years?

New Delhi, Aug. 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's overseas visits since 2021 have cost the exchequer approximately ₹557 crore, according to details tabled by the government in the Rajya Sabha.

The government said Prime Minister Modi's official foreign visits undertaken from the beginning of 2026 through early July have so far incurred an estimated expenditure of ₹74.6 crore, though it noted that several expenses remain provisional and are subject to final settlement.

Among this year's visits, Norway emerged as the costliest destination, with the visit costing ₹17.47 crore. The visit formed part of a multi-nation European tour in May that also included the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden and Italy.

The February visit to Israel was the second most expensive at ₹11.92 crore, followed by the late June visit to Seychelles, which cost ₹8.22 crore. Other overseas destinations during the year included Malaysia, New Zealand and the Slovak Republic. The government said expenditure details for the France visit are yet to be finalised.

The parliamentary reply also provided expenditure figures from previous governments for comparison. It noted that then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to the United States in 2011 cost ₹10.74 crore, while his 2013 visit to Russia cost ₹9.96 crore.

On the outcomes of the Prime Minister's overseas engagements, the government said several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements have been signed since July 2021 across sectors including renewable energy, healthcare, digital technology, agriculture, space cooperation and defence exchanges.

These agreements involved partner countries such as Australia, Bhutan, Brazil, France and Germany, among others.

Separately, the government informed Parliament that India attracted ₹36.4 lakh crore in foreign direct investment between April 2021 and December 2025. It attributed these inflows, in part, to the outcomes of the Prime Minister's foreign visits and the agreements concluded during these diplomatic engagements.
