Frequently Asked Questions

Does reporting a Gross Total Income (GTI) above Rs 100 crore make someone a billionaire?

A GTI above Rs 100 crore reflects a person's taxable annual income, not their total wealth or net worth. Billionaire status is typically based on net worth, not yearly income.

Why did the Finance Ministry refer to people with GTI above Rs 100 crore?

The figures are based on Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filed for Assessment Year 2025-26. The government does not have a statutory definition of a "billionaire" under the Income-tax Act, and the data simply identifies individuals who reported Gross Total Income exceeding Rs 100 crore.
