India’s vast market, private sector offer huge opportunities: German Ambassador

Philipp Ackermann reflected on how India's ongoing energy transition journey can provide valuable lessons and serve as a model of global best practices for other nations charting their own paths toward sustainability.

New Delhi [India], June 19: German Ambassador to India Dr Philipp Ackermann said India's massive scale and dynamic private sector offer immense opportunities to deepen relations between India and Germany.

Speaking at the event co-organised by Ministry of New & Renewable Energy called "10th edition of the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP) Conversation in New Delhi," German Ambassador said true self-reliance can be unlocked through strong bilateral partnerships, highlighting the trade potential between both the countries.

He highlighted that India and Germany share a vital, common aspiration to achieve energy security, particularly in light of today's complex geopolitical landscape.

Furthermore, the Ambassador reflected on how India's ongoing energy transition journey can provide valuable lessons and serve as a model of global best practices for other nations charting their own paths toward sustainability.

The discussion also explored the next growth frontiers for India’s renewable energy sector, the opportunities that lie ahead for the industry and the pathways to balance the imperatives of energy transition and energy security.

The event reaffirmed the significance of the India–Germany Green and Sustainable Development Partnership as a vital platform for deepening bilateral cooperation and fostering knowledge exchange in the Renewable Energy sector.

As India accelerates Renewable Energy deployment while ensuring reliable and affordable energy access the panel discussion brought together policymakers, international partners, industry leaders and think tanks to deliberate on the potential of Renewable Energy to strengthen energy security, enable a balanced and holistic energy transition, and power India’s long term economic growth and development aspirations.

As per the figures from Germany's Destatis (Federal Statistical Office), Indo-German bilateral trade touched an all-time high of US$ 33.40 billion (+0.36%) with exports from India at US$ 15.09 billion (-2.20%) and imports to India from Germany at US$ 18.31 billion (+2.58%) in calendar year 2024.

India was Germany’s 23rd largest trading partner in 2024. As per figures from Bundesbank, Indo-German trade in services in 2024 rose by 15% year-on-year, reaching a record US$ 17.03 billion.

India’s services exports to Germany were approx. US$ 10.31 billion and services imports from Germany were approx. US$ 6.72 billion.

Germany was the 8th largest trading partner for India in 2024-25. It was India’s 12th largest trading partner in 2023-24 and 11th largest trading partner in 2022-23.
