New Delhi: Traditional Indian sports and disciplines could get a major global platform at the Commonwealth Games 2030, with Kabaddi and Yoga likely to be included in the event scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad.
The development comes after India officially received the baton for the 2030 Commonwealth Games at the conclusion of the Glasgow Games, marking the start of preparations for what is expected to be a significantly larger edition of the multi-sport event.
According to officials, the Ahmedabad Games are likely to feature 15 to 17 sports, compared with the scaled-down Glasgow edition, which hosted around 10 disciplines. As host nation, India is expected to push for the inclusion of sports with strong indigenous roots, with Kabaddi and Yoga emerging as leading contenders.
Kabaddi, one of India's most popular traditional sports, has been a medal event at the Asian Games since 1990, with India dominating the discipline and winning gold in eight of the nine editions held so far. Its inclusion in the Commonwealth Games would provide the sport with a broader international audience and could strengthen its case for greater global recognition.

Yoga, meanwhile, could make its debut as a competitive discipline at the Commonwealth Games. Traditionally regarded as a wellness and lifestyle practice, Yoga has increasingly moved into the realm of competitive sport through Yogasana events. India's hosting of the first World Yogasana Sports Championship is seen as a key step in building international acceptance for Yoga as a competitive discipline.
The 2030 Commonwealth Games are expected to play a crucial role in India's broader sporting ambitions, with Ahmedabad's preparations also being viewed as an important milestone in the country's bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
