Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia drive strong auto sales growth in May 2026

Strong consumer demand, new product launches and improving market sentiment helped both passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle makers post encouraging sales numbers during the month.

New Delhi (India), June 1: India’s automobile industry continued its positive momentum in May 2026, with several leading manufacturers reporting healthy year-on-year growth.

Strong consumer demand, new product launches and improving market sentiment helped both passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle makers post encouraging sales numbers during the month.

Maruti Suzuki retained its leadership position and achieved its highest-ever monthly sales performance.

The company sold a total of 2,42,688 units in May 2026, including a record domestic sales figure of 1,93,535 units.

Exports also remained strong at 41,914 units, while sales to other OEMs stood at 7,239 units.

The achievement highlights Maruti Suzuki’s continued dominance in the Indian passenger vehicle market.

Hyundai Motor India also delivered a strong performance. The company reported domestic sales of 47,837 units, registering a 9.1% growth compared to May 2025.

Supported by exports of 13,000 units, Hyundai’s total sales reached 61,137 units during the month, reflecting a 4.1% increase year-on-year.

Kia India emerged as one of the fastest-growing passenger vehicle brands in May.

The company recorded its highest-ever May sales since entering Indian market, dispatching 27,586 units. This represents a growth of 23.6% over the 22,315 units sold in the same month last year.

Kia attributed the growth to sustained demand for popular models such as the Seltos and Sonet, while newer products including the Carens Clavis, Clavis EV and MY26 Syros also contributed to the sales momentum.

The company’s year-to-date sales reached 1,39,197 units, up 14.6% from the corresponding period in 2025.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor maintained its steady growth trajectory, reporting sales of 33,128 units in May 2026.

This marks a 7% increase over the 30,864 units sold in May 2025. Domestic sales accounted for 30,574 units, while exports contributed 2,554 units.

JSW MG Motor India sold 6,084 vehicles during the month despite challenges such as rising commodity costs, supply chain disruptions and increasing freight expenses.

The company also expands the SUV portfolio with the launch of MG Majestor, positioned in the premium D+ SUV segment.

Nissan Motor India continued its recovery journey and registered one of the highest growth rates among automakers. Domestic wholesales rose 118% year-on-year to 2,948 units.

Combined with exports of 5,023 units, Nissan’s total wholesale stood at 7,971 units in May. The company has now reported domestic growth for three consecutive months.

The commercial vehicle segment also delivered positive results. Tata Motors reported total sales of 32,850 commercial vehicles across domestic and international markets, reflecting a 17% increase compared to May last year.

Mahindra & Mahindra Trucks and Buses business recorded sales of 3,129 units, registering 18% year-on-year growth.

The overall performance in May indicates that demand remains healthy across key vehicle segments, with automakers benefiting from new launches, expanding product portfolios and improving customer confidence.
