Washington, June 8: US President Donald Trump has said that Israel and Iran are “looking to do an immediate ceasefire,” suggesting that negotiations toward a broader peace agreement are currently underway.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed optimism over the possibility of de-escalation but cautioned that the process could be disrupted by "ignorance or stupidity,” warning that such factors may derail the overall peace deal.

He further indicated that discussions remain ongoing and stressed that diplomatic efforts must hold for any final agreement to succeed.

The comments come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East after the fresh rounds of attacks were made by Iran and Israel.

According to Al-Jazeera, the armed forces of Iran have announced the end of military operations against Israel. However, Iran has warned that a more crushing response will be given if strikes on Lebanon or its territory are carried out.

Iran's response followed after Israel attacked several Iranian cities, including the capital city Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan, as tensions escalated after Israel struck the southern suburbs of Lebanon’s capital.

Earlier, the American forces struck Iranian coastal radar sites on Saturday after shooting down drones launched by Iran toward the Strait of Hormuz.

The US military said it believed the four Iranian drones were targeting regional maritime traffic. US Central Command stated on X that it subsequently struck Iran’s surveillance sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island, both located in the Strait of Hormuz.

The attacks have raised fresh concerns over the fragile ceasefire. However, US President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that “the situation with Iran seems to be going quite well” and added that the US would soon exit Iran “one way or the other.”
