New Delhi [India], June 25 : Are we really safe in high-rise apartments?
The devastating earthquake in which about 10k-1 lakh are anticipated to lose lives has sent a lesson to people who are on hunt to own a flat in high rise buildings.
The catastrophic event has forced the world to question the safety of modern high-rise buildings and has become a warning about whether vertical cities are truly prepared for nature’s strongest forces ?
A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Venezuela at 6:04 PM local time, with the epicenter located 28 km northwest of Montalbán in Carabobo state, at a depth of 13.2 km.
The intense shaking was felt across major regions including Caracas, Valencia, Puerto Cabello, La Guaira, and parts of neighbouring Colombia.
A terrifying escape
One Venezuelan resident captured the horror inside his apartment building as he ran down the stairs during the powerful tremors. The video showed large cracks appearing in the stairwell, damaged walls, and residents rushing to escape.
For people living on higher floors, the earthquake turned into a nightmare. A man stranded on the 20th floor described how it took several terrifying minutes to reach the ground. During his descent, he witnessed families crying, children screaming for help, and residents desperately trying to find a safe way out.
The earthquake transformed once-busy apartment buildings into scenes of panic, with many residents left outside, afraid to return home due to fears of aftershocks and structural damage.

Nature’s force hit Venezuela’s modernization
The earthquake has badly impacted Venezuela’s urban infrastructure, damaging buildings and raising concerns about the strength of modern constructions. Years of modernization, expanding cities, and rising high-rise developments have faced a major test against seismic forces.
The disaster has shown that advanced-looking skylines and tall structures are not enough as earthquake-resistant designs. But strict construction standards, and emergency preparedness are critically essential for public safety and lives.
Although, initially the authorities reported that at least 32 people were killed and more than 700 injured after the powerful earthquakes. Later updates said the death toll climbed to 164, with more than 900 people injured as rescue operations continued.
A warning for high-rise cities
The Venezuela earthquake has become a reminder for rapidly growing cities where thousands of people now live on dozens of floors above the ground. While high-rise buildings can be engineered to survive earthquakes, their safety depends heavily on construction quality, maintenance, and strict adherence to safety standards.
As families continue searching for homes in skyscrapers, the biggest question is not just how high a building can go but also how safely it can stand when the ground beneath it starts moving.
