New Delhi: India’s two major milk producers, Amul and Mother Dairy on Wednesday hiked price of fresh pouch milk by Rs 2 per litre across major variants and packs across the country, effective from May 14.
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) which owns the Amul brand name said in a release that the revised rates will apply to all variants of Amul milk.
On the other hand, Mother Dairy explained its position and said that the revision has been made due to a sustained increase in farmer procurement prices over the past year.
After the price revision, token milk will cost Rs 58 per litre from Rs 56 earlier, while full cream milk will cost at Rs 72 per litre from Rs 70.

"This price hike is being done due to increase in overall cost of operation and production of milk. There is a substantial increase in cost of cattle feed, milk packaging film and fuel during the year," the GCMMF said.
The Gujarat-based cooperative stated that the increased cost of milk production and operations have compelled the marketing entities to revise the milk prices.
GCMMF further added that its unions have also raised procurement prices paid to farmers by Rs 30 per kilogram of fat which was 3.7 percent up compared to May 2025.

"Amul as a policy passes on almost 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for milk and milk products to the milk producers. The price revision shall help in sustaining remunerative milk prices to our milk producers and to encourage them for higher milk production," the cooperative said.
While Mother Dairy in its release added, “Mother Dairy will revise the consumer prices of its liquid milk variants by Rs 2 per litre, effective May 14, 2026. The revision has been necessitated in view of the sustained increase in farmer procurement prices, of around 6 per cent over the past one year.”
"This revision represents only a partial pass through of increased costs and is aimed at maintaining a fair balance between farmer welfare and consumer interests," a Mother Dairy spokesperson said.
The price of Sanchi milk, the most widely consumed milk in Madhya Pradesh, has also been increased.
Despite the price hike announced by major milk producers Amul and Mother Dairy, milk marketing companies in South India and several other regions have not announced any increase in prices.
