New Delhi [India], June 30 : Bangladesh’s closer engagement with China has once again brought the Teesta River project into the spotlight.
China has rejected concerns over its cooperation with Bangladesh on the Teesta River, saying the project is a matter between the two countries and does not involve any third party.
Responding to questions about India’s concerns, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that China-Bangladesh cooperation “does not target any third party” and should remain free from outside influence.
Although, a journalist raised concerns that the Teesta River project is located close to India’s northeastern region and asked about New Delhi’s position on growing China-Bangladesh cooperation.
Why Is India Watching the Teesta Project Closely?
The Teesta River is an important water resource for both Bangladesh and India. The river flows through India before entering Bangladesh.
Thus, it is a sensitive issue between the two neighbours.
For India, the concern is not only about water management but also about China’s expanding presence in a region that is strategically important.
India’s northeastern states are connected to the rest of the country through the narrow Siliguri Corridor, often called the “Chicken’s Neck.” Any increase in strategic influence by a rival power near this area is closely watched by New Delhi.
Beyond Water: The Strategic Angle
The Teesta project is being viewed by analysts as more than an infrastructure or water-management initiative.
China’s involvement in Bangladesh has increased over the years through investments, trade, infrastructure projects, and diplomatic engagement.
The latest development comes as China announced a visit by Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, highlighting the growing relationship between Beijing and Dhaka.
For India, Bangladesh has traditionally been an important partner in South Asia. Strong India-Bangladesh ties have supported New Delhi’s Act East policy, which focuses on improving connectivity and relations with Southeast Asia.

Is China’s Move a Challenge to India?
As some experts see Bangladesh’s increasing engagement with China as a strategic balancing move by Dhaka, where the country is trying to maintain relationships with multiple major powers.
While others believe India’s concerns are linked to the larger competition between India and China for influence in South Asia.
However, China maintains that its projects with Bangladesh are based on economic cooperation and are not directed against any country.

What Lies Ahead?
The Teesta issue shows how regional projects can become connected with larger geopolitical interests.
For Bangladesh, the priority remains economic development, water management, and infrastructure growth. For India, maintaining strong ties with Dhaka while addressing security concerns will remain important.
The future of the Teesta project and India-China-Bangladesh relations will depend on how these countries balance cooperation, competition, and regional interests.
