Chennai, Tamil Nadu: In a historic political transition for Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay, founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state on Sunday at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in capital Chennai.
Governor Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office to CM Vijay, while nine ministers also to took oath alongside him.
TVK leaders 'Bussy' N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K.A. Sengottaiyan, Dr. K.G. Arunraaj, P. Venkataramanan, C.T.R. Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, Dr. T.K. Prabhu, S. Keerthana are the nine ministers of CM Vijay.
Just two years old TVK has got support from the Congress which secured five seats in the recently concluded state elections. Other parties such as CPI, CPM, VCK, and IUML have also supported TVK to form the government. Tamil Nadu's new CM enjoys majority in the house with support of 121 MLAs.
Massive arrangements was put in place across Chennai as thousands of supporters are expected to attend the ceremony, marking the rise of one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars to the state’s top political office.
Light showers and drizzles in the city added to the charged atmosphere as supporters gathered to celebrate the moment many described as “historic”.
The 51-year-old actor-turned-politician scripted a remarkable political debut, with TVK emerging as the single largest party in the Assembly elections by securing 108 seats and over 34 per cent vote share.
Though the verdict remained fractured, Vijay managed to secure majority support with the backing of Congress, VCK, Left parties and IUML after days of political consultations and negotiations.
Popularly known as “Thalapathy” among fans, Vijay entered the film industry through the movie Naalaiya Theerpu, directed by his father S. A. Chandrasekhar.
Over the years, he emerged as one of Tamil cinema’s biggest box-office stars, delivering several blockbuster films, many of which carried strong social and political messaging. His energetic songs and mass appeal helped him build a loyal following cutting across age groups.
Political observers noted that the election witnessed unprecedented participation from young and first-time voters, with many previously apolitical citizens turning out in large numbers.
Vijay’s campaign slogan, “Unga Vijay Naan Varen”, resonated strongly with the electorate, particularly Gen Z voters and urban youth.
Vijay’s ascent from cinema icon to Chief Minister on his very first electoral attempt marks a significant moment in Tamil Nadu’s political history, long shaped by the intersection of cinema and politics.
