Centre plans 300+ special trains for Jagannath Rath Puri yatra

Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, the Minister said that he will review the railway preparations for the upcoming Rath Yatra to ensure smooth operations and seamless travel for devotees.

New Delhi [India]: Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday informed that more than 300 special trains will be operated for Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath this year.

These are additional trains to the regular more than 800 trains.

Talking to reporters in New Delhi today, the Minister said that he will review the railway preparations for the upcoming Rath Yatra to ensure smooth operations and seamless travel for devotees.

He stated, a temporary arrangement will be made to accommodate 30 thousand passengers at Puri Railway station.

Vaishnaw also informed that the Railways will operate more than 100 special trains during the Onam festival this year.

The holy town of Puri is witness an overwhelming spiritual spectacle every year as the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath begins with grandeur and devotion.

Lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad visit the city to participate in this sacred event.

The ceremonial Pahandi Bije – the ritual procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra – conducted with traditional fervour every year.

In this sacred procession, the deities escorts from the sanctum sanctorum of the Jagannath Temple to their majestic chariots by dedicated priests. Following the Pahandi, the deities ceremoniously seat on their respective chariots – Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalana.

In a key royal ritual, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb perform the Chhera Pahanra (ceremonial sweeping) of the chariots with a golden broom, symbolising humility and service to the Lord.

The pulling of the chariots commence around 4:00 AM, marking the beginning of the deities’ annual journey to the Gundicha Temple.
