New Delhi [India]: The Ministry of Defence on Saturday dismissed as "deliberately misleading and factually incorrect" social media posts and reports alleging that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh claimed no Indian soldier lost his life during Operation Sindoor in his address to Parliament on July 28, 2025.

In a statement, the ministry said certain posts had selectively quoted an isolated portion of the Defence Minister's speech to falsely suggest that he had denied casualties among Indian soldiers during the operation.

"Certain posts circulating on social media platforms have sought to misrepresent the Raksha Mantri's address delivered on the floor of Parliament on July 28, 2025. These posts have selectively quoted an isolated portion of the speech to falsely imply that the Raksha Mantri claimed that no Indian soldier lost his life during Operation Sindoor. These are deliberately misleading and factually incorrect," the ministry said.

The clarification comes after several Opposition leaders, including Congress leader Pawan Khera, Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), questioned Rajnath Singh's statement in Parliament and accused the government of misleading the House over reports that six Indian soldiers were martyred during Operation Sindoor.

Explaining the context of the minister's remarks, the Defence Ministry said Rajnath Singh was responding specifically to what it described as a false and widely circulated narrative claiming that Indian Air Force pilots had been lost during the operation.

"Those who have sought to construct a controversy out of Raksha Mantri's Parliamentary address have done so by deliberately ignoring the full context of his remarks. It must be recalled that at the time of the Raksha Mantri's address, a particularly persistent and dominant narrative had taken hold, both in certain sections of the media and on social media, which claimed that Indian pilots had been lost during Operation Sindoor," the ministry added in the release.

The ministry added that the Defence Minister's parliamentary address was intended to highlight the success of Operation Sindoor, during which "more than 100 terrorists and Pakistani soldiers were neutralised" and Pakistani air bases and military infrastructure along the Line of Control suffered extensive damage.

Reiterating the government's commitment to honouring the armed forces, the ministry said the Centre remains steadfast in its "respect, gratitude, and reverence" for every member of the Indian Armed Forces, especially those who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.

It added that the names of fallen soldiers have been inscribed on the walls of the National War Memorial and that the government has extended educational, healthcare and other benefits to their families and dependents.
