SP Split Buzz: How the Political Storm Started

New Delhi [India], June 18: A fresh political controversy erupted after Uttar Pradesh minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief Om Prakash Rajbhar claimed that the Samajwadi Party could face a major internal split.

Rajbhar alleged that some Samajwadi Party MPs were unhappy with the party leadership and suggested that a group of leaders could move away from Akhilesh Yadav’s camp.

Rajbhar later intensified his claims, saying the split was inevitable and that dissatisfied MPs were preparing for a rebellion. He also claimed the development could involve a major leader from eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The BJP also joined the political debate, with Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya claiming that several SP MPs were unhappy and could switch sides.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav dismissed the split claims and said the party remains united. He accused the BJP of having a history of creating divisions within opposition parties and said SP was prepared for the political challenges ahead.

The SP leadership has described the allegations as political pressure tactics ahead of the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections.

Why UP Politics Is Heating Up

The controversy comes at a crucial time as Uttar Pradesh moves closer to Assembly elections. The Samajwadi Party is currently one of the biggest opposition forces in the state.

SP’s recent political journey has seen major ups and downs. The party suffered a major setback in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, when it lost power after its previous government’s term. However, the party made a strong comeback in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, improving its performance and emerging as a key player in national politics.

SP Split Claims Linked To Larger Opposition Turmoil

The latest SP controversy is also being compared with recent splits in other opposition parties:

  • Shiv Sena witnessed a major split after a faction led by Eknath Shinde separated from the original leadership, changing Maharashtra’s political equations.

  • Trinamool Congress has also faced internal challenges and defections, with BJP leaders pointing to these developments while attacking opposition unity.

  • Aam Aadmi Party has also faced political turbulence in different states, adding to the wider debate over opposition stability.

The Bigger Political Picture

For BJP, the SP split narrative is being projected as a sign of internal dissatisfaction within the opposition. For SP, the challenge is to maintain unity and protect the momentum gained after its Lok Sabha performance.

As with UP elections approaching, every political move, alliance shift, and leadership dispute could impact the state’s electoral battle.
