Indian military to modernize through startups, industry and academia: CDS Subramani

Addressing the media in the national capital today, he said that innovation in thought and action will drive the future capability development of India's Armed Forces.

New Delhi: India's Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) NS Raja Subramani on Sunday (May 31) said the Indian armed forces will modernise the military by collaborating with industry, academia, startups, and the research ecosystem.

Addressing the media in the national capital today, he said that innovation in thought and action will drive the future capability development of India's Armed Forces.

"Innovation in thought and action will drive our capability development. Greater collaboration between the military, the industry, academia, startups and the research ecosystem will be the key enabler for modernisation," he added.

Modernisation of Defence Armed Forces involves the acquisition of platforms, technologies, and weapon systems to upgrade and augment Defence capabilities and is a continuous process based on threat perception, operational necessities, and technological changes to keep the Armed Forces in a state of readiness to meet the entire spectrum of security challenges.

As per Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, India's domestic defence production was 46,000 crore rupees in 2012 which has grown to more than one and a half lakh crore rupees.

As per the official data, the Defence Acquisition Council approved capital acquisition proposals worth a total of cost of over Rs 3.84 lakh crore since January 2025 to enhance the country’s defence readiness, with focus on modernisation through indigenisation.

Going further, CDS reaffirmed the Armed Forces' commitment to safeguarding India's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"We are committed to protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country," he stated.

General Subramani paid tribute to his predecessors, General Bipin Rawat and General Anil Chauhan, for their leadership and contributions.

He also acknowledged the courage and professionalism of soldiers, sailors, and air warriors, stating that their training and welfare would remain a top priority.

The CDS further reiterated the Armed Forces' commitment to the welfare of veterans and Veer Naris, assuring citizens that the military will continue to serve the nation with dedication, courage, honour, and professionalism.
