New Delhi: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Sunday underlined India’s evolving foreign policy approach of “multi-alignment,” saying the country’s growing strategic and economic interests require it to maintain strong ties with multiple global powers simultaneously.
Speaking during a joint press briefing with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jaishankar said India’s diplomatic engagements are shaped by practical interests and the changing global order.
“Because our interests are growing, we have relationships with all the parties involved,” Jaishankar said while responding to a question.
Referring to the ongoing Ukraine conflict, the minister highlighted India’s ability to maintain ties with different stakeholders despite geopolitical tensions.
“We are seeing this in the Ukraine conflict as well, where we have very strong relations with Russia, we have it with Europe, we have it with Ukraine as well, we have it with the United States, and then the question is how do you manage all of them?” he said.

Jaishankar described the approach as a reflection of India’s expanding global role and strategic autonomy.
“So in that sense, yes, it is multi-alignment, because today’s India has that range of interests which require us to manage multiple accounts,” he added.
The remarks come amid deepening India-US strategic cooperation in areas including trade, technology, defence and Indo-Pacific security, while New Delhi continues to maintain longstanding ties with Moscow and strengthen engagement with Europe and other global partners.
India has consistently maintained that its foreign policy decisions are guided by national interests and issue-based partnerships rather than bloc politics.

The comments come at a time when the opposition parties are criticising the Modi government for its soft stance against the US.
Speaking alongside EAM Jaishankar, US secretary of state Macro Rubio said that India is one of America’s ‘most important strategic partners’.
On Thursday, US Secretary of State arrived in Kolkata, marking the first stop of his four-day official visit to India. After that, he landed in the national capital, New Delhi where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss partnerships between the two countries.
