New Delhi/Tehran: Mojtaba Khomeini, the son and successor of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ali Khomeini, is unlikely to attend his father's funeral due to security concerns, according to remarks made by the Supreme Leader's representative to India.

The development comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, with Iranian officials reportedly fearing that Mojtaba Khomeini could be targeted if he makes a public appearance during the funeral proceedings.

Meanwhile, Iran has released the first images of Khamenei's coffin ahead of the funeral.

The disclosure was made by the Supreme Leader's representative to India while departing for Iran on a special flight carrying Iranian diplomats, embassy staff, journalists and invited political figures from India. Speaking to reporters at the airport, the representative said Mojtaba Khomeini "might not be present" at the funeral because of continuing security threats.

According to the representative, Iranian authorities believe Israel could attempt to strike Mojtaba Khomeini if he appears publicly, prompting the decision to keep him away from the ceremony.

The funeral of Iran's former Supreme Leader is expected to draw senior political and religious leaders from across the region, making it one of the country's most significant state events. However, the reported absence of the new Supreme Leader is likely to be one of the most closely watched aspects of the proceedings.

Mojtaba Khomeini was named Iran's new Supreme Leader within days of his father's death. Since then, he has not made any public appearances, fuelling speculation about his condition. Several Israeli and U.S. media reports had claimed he was injured, seriously ill or even in a coma, though Iranian officials have not confirmed those reports.

Sources cited by the Supreme Leader's representative maintained that Mojtaba Khomeini is safe, actively taking official decisions and functioning in his new role, but may continue to avoid public appearances because of security risks.

The reported decision also comes against the backdrop of escalating regional tensions. Recent remarks by Israel's Defence Minister indicating that Iran's top leadership remains within Israel's sights have drawn strong condemnation from Tehran.

Meanwhile, reports have also pointed to heightened military activity in southern Lebanon, adding to concerns over the broader regional security situation.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation from Tehran regarding Mojtaba Khomeini's attendance at the funeral. Iranian authorities are yet to issue a formal statement on the matter.
