New Delhi: An active western disturbance brought widespread weather changes across northern parts of India, triggering rain, thunderstorms and strong winds while also affecting the progress of the southwest monsoon.

The weather system caused heavy rainfall and gusty winds across Delhi and several north Indian states, providing relief from the intense heatwave while potentially slowing the smooth advancement of the monsoon.

India’s weather department also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across parts of northern India, with scattered to fairly widespread rainfall likely over Northeast India.

India Meteorological Department today announced long-term forecast for seasonal rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon over June–September, 2026.

The IMD said, "Quantitatively, the southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall over the whole country is likely to be 90% of the Long Period Average (LPA), with a possible model error of ±4%. This means that during the 2026 monsoon season (June to September), the highest likelihood is for below normal rainfall over the whole country."

"During the southwest monsoon season (June to September, 2026), rainfall over Northeast India (94-106% of LPA) is likely to be normal. The highest likelihood is for below normal rainfall over Central India and South Peninsular India (<94% of LPA) and Northwest India (<92% of LPA)," the IMD said.

According to the IMD, the rainfall during the southwest monsoon season is most likely to be below normal (<94% of LPA) in the Monsoon Core Zone (MCZ).

"During June to September 2026, the highest likelihood is for below normal seasonal rainfall over most parts of the country; except some areas over northwestern and northeastern India, eastern parts of the southern peninsula, some areas over adjoining east-central India, and a few isolated pockets over eastern India, where rainfall is likely to be normal to above normal," the IMD added.

"During June 2026, monthly rainfall over most parts of the country is very likely to be below normal; except over some parts of northwestern India, northeastern India and southern peninsula, and a few isolated pockets over central India, where rainfall is likely to be normal to above normal," the IMD forecasted.
