New delhi [India], June 22 : According to ship tracking data, shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has slowed down significantly, after Iran declared the key maritime route to be closed.
While the decline comes amid heightened tensions in the region following Iran’s announcement linked to Israeli strikes on Lebanon. The Strait of Hormuz, which is considered as one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes has now become a focal point of concern for global trade and oil markets.
A Dramatic Fall
The Data analysed by maritime intelligence firm Windward shows a steep fall in ship movements through the waterway.
According to that on Sunday, only 12 vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz, compared with 35 transits recorded the previous day. The sharp reduction indicates that shipping companies are may be avoiding the route due to security concerns.
