Bern (Switzerland), June 8: Switzerland goes to the polls on June 14 in a referendum to cap its population at 10 million, sparking business concerns over a potential economic shock.

The supporters of the cap, championed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party have said that the population growth is straining infrastructure and driving up rents and crime.

The Swiss population had grown to 9.1 million by the end of 2025.

The initiative, known as the Sustainability Initiative or “No to a Switzerland with 10 million,” was launched by the Swiss People’s Party.

It seeks to limit population growth through measures on immigration and international agreements if thresholds are approached.

Switzerland’s population stands at approximately 9.1 million.

The proposal aims to keep the figure below 10 million until 2050, with provisions for sustainable management of resources, infrastructure, and public services.

Businesses have expressed concerns that the measure could restrict access to foreign labor and harm economic activity.

The government has opposed the initiative, citing potential impacts on international cooperation.
