New Delhi [India]: India has sent a delegation of Indian religious leaders who paid tribute to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, at his funeral ceremony.
The representatives of the Indian delegation comprise Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
The delegation, including Hindu, Sikh & Muslim clerics, received military honours and offered prayers amid Iranian flags.
Party heads and other major officials of the BJP, such as Nitin Nabin, Mallikarjun Kharge and Pawan Khera, are invited by Iran to attend the funeral of the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to the latest video released by the Iranian embassy, the former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and MP represented the grand old party.

Meanwhile, Mehbooba Mufti, former Jammu and Kashmir CM and PDP chief, and Aga Syed Hassan Mosavi Al Safavi, who is the current President of Jammu and Kashmir Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, are also participating in the Indian delegation. The coffin of the Iranian supreme leader has been placed at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran for public viewing. The burial will take place in his hometown of Mashhad on July 9, according to the official information.
Meanwhile, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal informed about the delegation and said, "Regarding the demise of Iran's Supreme Leader and the delegation sent by us, the Government of India has already issued a press release on the matter." On our behalf, the Governor of Bihar, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain, along with Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita, is in Tehran today."
According to the reports, around 20 million people will be participating in what could be the world's largest funeral to date.
In a post on X, Mehbooba Mufti expressed deepest condolences & solidarity.
She wrote in the post, "It's an honour for me to be here in Tehran to express my deepest condolences & solidarity on the martyrdom of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, a revered leader who dared to stand against the tide & fought for the oppressed.”

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who ruled Iran as Supreme Leader for 36 years, died February 28, 2026, in an air strike by the US in the early days of the beginning of the Iran-US war. At the time of his killing, Iran's supreme leader was working at his official residence in Iran.
