Donald Trump praises PM Modi, says ‘I love Prime Minister'

During the call, Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted the growing ties between India and the United States.

New Delhi: US President Donald Trump made a surprise audio call to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor during celebrations marking the 250th US Independence Day at the US Embassy in India on Sunday.

The call came while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ambassador Sergio Gor were attending the event at the embassy.

During the call, Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted the growing ties between India and the United States.

“I love the Prime Minister. Modi is great. He's my friend,” Trump said during the call.

The US President also underlined the strength of bilateral relations between the two countries.

“We've never been closer to India and India can count on me 100 percent and our country,” he said.

Trump further added, “I'm a big big fan of Prime Minister Modi.”

In his remarks, Trump also praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling him one of the best diplomats in US history.

“Marco is the greatest. He's going down as the greatest Secretary of State in the history of the US,” Trump said.

The surprise call drew applause from attendees at the embassy event, which commemorated the 250th anniversary celebrations of American Independence Day.

Trump concluded the interaction by asking officials to convey his greetings to Prime Minister Modi.

“It’s an honor to talk and say hello to Prime Minister Modi and let him know I'm a big fan,” he said.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State arrived in Kolkata, marking the first stop of his four-day official visit to India.

After that, he landed in the national capital, New Delhi where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss partnerships between the two countries.
