The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India has flagged excess expenditure of ₹3,541 crore and raised concerns over financial irregularities in Maharashtra's Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana.

According to the CAG's findings, the audit identified significant deficiencies in budget estimation, expenditure control, and overall financial management of the scheme during the 2024–25 financial year.

The report states that the Women and Child Development Department incurred an excess expenditure of approximately ₹3,541 crore without providing any specific justification.

While the state government had allocated ₹29,693 crore for the scheme, the total expenditure reportedly rose to around ₹33,237 crore.

The audit observations have sparked serious questions over budgetary discipline and financial oversight in the implementation of the flagship welfare scheme.

The CAG has highlighted the need for stronger expenditure controls and more accurate budget planning to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

The Maharashtra government is yet to issue a detailed response to the audit observations.
