Fin Min directs PSU bank chiefs, insurers to tighten spending, cut expenses

New Delhi: The Ministry of Finance on Monday issued a directive to the Chairmen, Managing Directors, and Chief Executives Officers (CEOs) of all government banks and government insurance companies to cut down on expenses.

The Ministry further directed that all meetings should be held via video conferencing unless the physical meeting in absolutely necessary.

The government has also directed to refrain from going on the foreign tours.

In addition, the Finance Ministry asked to convert existing petrol and diesel vehicles to Electric Vehicles (EVs).

This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to curtail use of petrol and diesel, use public transport where possible, and car pool as much as possible amid the conflict in the West Asia.

"In the crisis we face today, we must also place great emphasis on conserving foreign exchange. Because petrol-diesel has become so much more expensive in the world, prices have risen several times higher than before," PM said.

"Therefore, it is our collective responsibility to save the foreign exchange spent on purchasing petrol-diesel; by conserving petrol-diesel, we must also preserve that currency. For this, even our small efforts can reatly help the nation," he added.

Prime Minister along with Chief Ministers of several states trimmed their the size of his convoy.

Following PM, Chief Minister of Maharashtra took motorcycle to reach to the Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai from his official residence Varsha, to set an example. However, social media users fiercely criticised Fadnavis after the CM was seen with his regular convoy in Pune.

A few days back, PM Modi refuted a news report by a leading media house which claimed that high level talks are underway to tax foreign travel, calling it baseless and untrue.

PM wrote, “This is totally false. Not an iota of truth in this. There is no question of putting such restrictions on foreign travel," he wrote, adding that the government remains committed to improving both "Ease of Doing Business" and "Ease of Living".
