Bürgenstock [Switzerland], June 22: A significant diplomatic development is emerging following the first round of talks involving the United States and Iran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that sustained mediation efforts by Pakistan and Qatar have resulted in major progress toward ending the ongoing conflict in Lebanon.
According to the minister, discussions have produced several preliminary steps, including sanctions relief, the release of certain frozen Iranian assets, and the framework for a reconstruction plan.
He emphasized that the first major test of the evolving agreement will be the newly established Lebanon deconfliction mechanism aimed at reducing tensions on the ground.
Describing the opening round of negotiations as a "frosty start," the Iranian Foreign Minister acknowledged that talks began on a difficult note, with disagreements remaining between the delegations.
However, he suggested that diplomatic channels remain active and that further negotiations are expected.
The news platform Al Jazeera has reported that US, Iran agree on roadmap to reach a final deal within 60 days.
The minister also reiterated that strategic pressure points in the region remain a key factor in the negotiations, indicating that both sides continue to leverage their positions as discussions move forward.
According to the media reports, Iran has made it clear to the US that it will not give up right of enriching nuclear program. For context, Iran has been claiming from the very beginning that the purpose of its nuclear program is used for its energy needs and not for building weapons.
On the other hand, Iran has also maintained that complete end of strikes in Lebanon is a necessary condition for the continuation of the Iran-US peace talk.
US Vice President JD Vance on Sunday revealed Donald Trump's message to Iran's leadership, saying that the President had asked him to "turn over a new leaf" and help transform America's relationship with the Iranian people.
Speaking in Bürgenstock ahead of talks, Vance said, "What the President (Donald Trump) has asked us to do is turn over a new leaf to transform our leadership with the people of Iran and to extend an outstretched that says to people of Iran that if your leadership is willing to give up a driver of regional instability, if they are willing to give up nuclear weapon ambitions for the long term then United States is willing to fundamentally transform our relationship with that country."
