New Delhi [India], June 20 : A Fresh strike has been reported despite ceasefire agreement. The Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire has come under serious strain as both sides continue to accuse each other of violations. On Saturday morning, smoke was seen billowing over parts of southern Lebanon following reported Israeli strikes.
The escalation came shortly after a ceasefire arrangement aimed at stopping cross-border attacks. However, the truce has struggled to hold, with fighting continuing and both sides blaming the other for breaking the agreement.
Why Lebanon was pulled into the wider conflict ?
Tensions in Lebanon intensified after Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel in retaliation for a strike that killed Iran’s supreme leader, drawing Lebanon deeper into the wider US-Iran conflict.
The latest violence has raised fears that the Lebanon front could become another major battlefield, despite international efforts to contain the crisis.
Washington criticises Israeli operations
The United States has criticised Israel’s ongoing operations in Lebanon, warning that continued clashes could undermine a wider US-backed peace understanding with Iran.
Washington is concerned that renewed Israel-Hezbollah fighting could damage commitments to end hostilities on “all fronts”, including Lebanon.
US officials have pushed for the ceasefire to hold, fearing that continued military action could derail diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a broader regional war.
Hezbollah’s response
Hezbollah said it remained committed to resisting Israeli actions and accused Israel of continuing aggression despite ceasefire efforts. The group has argued that it has the right to respond to what it describes as Israeli violations and operations on Lebanese territory.
However, he previously also warned that any agreement must first involve an end to Israeli attacks and a withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
A fragile regional situation
The latest clashes highlight the difficulty of maintaining a ceasefire while wider regional tensions remain unresolved. With Lebanon now tied to the broader US-Iran crisis, any further escalation could threaten diplomatic efforts and risk expanding the conflict.
