New Delhi: Karnataka has emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the Central government's Electronic Development Fund (EDF), reinforcing its position as India's leading technology and innovation hub.

Launched to promote innovation and strengthen domestic capabilities in electronics and semiconductor design, the EDF has played a crucial role in supporting startups and early-stage companies working in areas such as chip design, embedded systems and advanced electronics technologies.

According to government data reported by WION, Karnataka accounted for 90 of the 128 companies supported under the fund, attracting nearly 64% of the total investments made through the scheme. The state's dominant share highlights the concentration of India's electronics and deep-tech innovation ecosystem in and around Bengaluru.

The city, often referred to as India's Silicon Valley, hosts a large network of startups, multinational technology companies, research institutions and venture capital firms. This ecosystem has enabled Karnataka to attract a significant portion of innovation-focused funding and talent, making it a preferred destination for technology-driven investments.

The trend reflects India's broader efforts to strengthen its electronics manufacturing and semiconductor ecosystem at a time when global supply chains are undergoing significant realignment. Countries worldwide are seeking to reduce dependence on a limited number of semiconductor manufacturing hubs, creating opportunities for emerging destinations such as India to expand their role in the global technology value chain.

Industry observers say the EDF's investment pattern demonstrates how established innovation ecosystems continue to attract a disproportionate share of funding. However, the concentration of investments in Karnataka also raises concerns about regional disparities.

Several other states have attracted far fewer companies and investments under the fund, suggesting that factors such as infrastructure, skilled talent, research capabilities and access to capital remain key differentiators in determining where technology ventures choose to operate.

As geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions continue to reshape the global electronics industry, India's efforts to build a robust domestic ecosystem for electronics and semiconductor innovation are expected to gain greater strategic importance, with Karnataka currently leading that transformation.
