He said that, in line with this provision, the state government had announced during the 2026 Budget Session that a committee would be set up to implement the Uniform Civil Code.

The committee will submit its report to the State Government within the next six months. Based on this report, the government intends to table the Uniform Civil Code Bill before both Houses of the Legislature during the upcoming winter session in Nagpur.

The committee comprises Former Supreme Court Judge Justice Ranjana Desai and Former Bombay High Court Judges Justice R. C. Chavan and Justice S. G. Mehare.

Former Chief Secretary and Former Advocate General of Maharashtra, Padma Shri awardee and Constitution expert Ramesh Patange, and Educationist and social activist Suvarna Rawal are also in the committee.

The proposed legislation is expected to cover matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and succession, irrespective of religion. Justice Desai had previously chaired the expert committee formed by the Uttarakhand and Gujarat governments for the implementation of UCC.

Uttarakhand became the first state in Post Independence India to enforce a Uniform Civil Code. Gujarat subsequently passed its own UCC legislation, while Assam became the third state to pass a UCC law earlier this year.
