Washington DC [USA]: US Congressman Ro Khanna has said that India America relations are at their lowest point currently due to the policies of President Donald Trump administration.
On Monday, speaking at the USISPF Summit in Washington DC, Khanna said, "The U.S.-India relationship has been at the lowest point in the last 30 years. Trump's policies of getting into a war in Iran has been utterly destructive."
"It has been utterly destructive to the prices in India of gas. Talk to Jai Shankar if you don't believe me. The idea that we engaged in a unilateral war without our allies, without even consulting Europe or Canada or India and made a mess of the world has hurt our credibility," he added.
Democrat Khanna who is known for his progressive politics and a leading voice on technological accountability, wealth inequality, and US-India relations, slammed Trump's tariffs adding that the trading partners of US have lost trust that was build in decades.
"And then the irrationality of the tariff war. I was in China and the Indian ambassador said to me, 'A generation of trust has been lost by this president of yours.' See, if we don't speak the truth about the damage that this president has done, not only at home but abroad, then we're just not living in reality," he added.
His remarks come at a time when a visible discontent have been witnessed in trading partners of the US especially after a deliberate tariff was imposed by President Trump on several countries.
Every major trading partner, which had trade surplus with US in any area, was dragged by US President to negotiate a trade deal. In addition, Trump's decision to strike Iran has adversely impact countries around the globe especially Europe and Asia due to the closure of strait of Hormuz.
On the other hand, top officials of Trump administration has been claiming that India under PM Narendra Modi shares a strong relations with President Trump.
Speaking at the same summit, US ambassador to India Sergio Gor said that US trusts India and talks are going on for greater cooperation in trade and investments. The two countries are in final stage of announcing a bilateral trade deal.
He said, " it's an incredibly gratifying thing to say that the United States trusts India, we work with India, and we look forward to identifying those next opportunities for both of our sides. Since I've gone there, we've also focused on bringing high-level visitors."
