Doha [Qatar]: Conflicting statements from Washington and Tehran have cast uncertainty over the possibility of fresh US-Iran talks in Doha, despite the United States confirming that its delegation is already en route to Qatar.
US President Donald Trump announced that a meeting with Iranian negotiators was scheduled for today in Doha as part of efforts to implement the 14-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) reached after weeks of heightened tensions triggered by US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
However, Iran has denied that any negotiations with the United States are scheduled, with officials maintaining that there is no planned meeting in Doha.
As of now, there has been no confirmation that an Iranian delegation has departed for Qatar.
This is not the first time conflicting messages have emerged from the two sides. During previous rounds of negotiations, President Trump had announced that a deal would be finalized on a Sunday, while Iranian officials publicly denied any such timeline before talks eventually moved forward later.
Iran continues to insist that further negotiations cannot take place unless hostilities cease. Tehran has accused the United States of violating the Memorandum of Understanding by carrying out attacks on Iranian targets.
The United States, however, has rejected those allegations, arguing that Iran initiated the latest escalation by targeting a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington has maintained that it will not allow Tehran to dictate terms regarding security in the strategic waterway.
If the Doha meeting does take place, discussions are expected to focus on two key issues: ensuring the continued security and openness of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route, and addressing Iran's nuclear programme. President Trump has repeatedly said that preventing Iran from advancing its nuclear ambitions remains a top priority for the United States.
