New Delhi [India]: The fragile ceasefire in West Asia has come under severe strain after the United States and Iran exchanged fresh military attacks, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces carried out strikes on multiple strategic locations in Iran, including Bandar Abbas and Qeshm Island.

Washington said the operation was launched in response to recent attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, describing the strikes as necessary to impose "heavy costs" on Iran.

Tehran condemned the attacks and vowed a "crushing response." Iranian officials later claimed that the country's armed forces had targeted 85 U.S. military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait in retaliation.

Reports from the region indicate that Kuwait activated its air defence systems in response to missile and drone threats. Iranian media also claimed that facilities linked to the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain were among the targets, although there has been no independent confirmation of the extent of the damage.

The latest escalation appears to have effectively shattered the ceasefire that both sides had previously agreed to under a memorandum of understanding. The exchange of strikes marks one of the most significant confrontations since the truce was announced, fueling concerns that the conflict could enter a prolonged and more dangerous phase.

Iranian media reports indicate that the situation on the ground remains tense, with growing skepticism among both the Iranian public and officials over the prospects of any lasting peace.

The reports say that there is a deep trust deficit.

Reports added that overnight U.S. strikes caused significant damage at several locations in Iran and temporarily disrupted flight operations. However, services at Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport have since resumed.

Meanwhile, another diplomatic development emerged as reports indicated that the White House has invited Lebanon's president to visit the United States on the 21st of this month, a move that could signal renewed diplomatic engagement amid the escalating regional crisis.

With both Washington and Tehran adopting increasingly hardline positions, the latest exchange of military action, economic pressure and hostile rhetoric has intensified concerns that the ceasefire has effectively collapsed, raising the risk of a prolonged conflict across the region.

Ends.
