New Delhi [India], June 23 : US Vice President JD Vance has sparked attention after openly appreciating Pakistan’s role in helping mediate between the United States and Iran and his 'we love Pakistan' comment.
Two Republican senators and many political analysts have flagged histories of Qatar and Pakistan in giving shelter to the terrorists.
The reactions came after President Trump's junior praised Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Ashim Muneer Pakistan, adding 'we love Pakistan.'
Reacting to Vance's 'we love Pakistan' comment, Senator Rick Scott in a post on X wrote, “It should be clear to everybody by now who our friends really are. Qatar and Pakistan have long histories of harbouring terrorists, and right now they seem far more invested in propping up Iran’s decades-long terror campaign than achieving a meaningful peace."
Talking to Fox News, Senator Tim Sheehy from Montana raised concerns and flagged role of Pakistan in protecting Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
“Pakistan, let's not forget, Pakistan hid bin Laden for a decade. They funded Ayatollah through ISI insurances,” Sheehy said.
Additionally, Vance appreciated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Aseem Muneer for their role in bringing Iran on table and acting as a mediator between US and Iran.
Speaking after conclusion of first round of the US-Iran peace deal on June 21 in Bürgenstock, US Vice President Vance said, “I have a few other notes of appreciation first of all Prime Minister of Pakistan, a dear friend of President and dear friend of mine, a guy who has been with his leadership and his very careful and skilled negotiation has got us to this point.”
"I will say that since Field Marshal Munir welcomed us with the Prime Minister in Islamabad, I have joked that I have two very, very important people in my life - an Indian and a Pakistani. The Indian is my wife, and the Pakistani is Field Marshal Munir," he said.
Vance Calls Asim Munir a Key Diplomatic Figure
Vance also spoke highly of Field Marshal Asim Munir, describing his role as important in the recent diplomatic developments. He added, calling him both a military leader and diplomat that American people and the world should know the role played by leadership and diplomacy in bringing the situation to this stage.
“I have two important people in my life one an Indian and a Pakistani, An Indian - my wife & the Pakistani is Marshall Aseem Muneer. I feel I had probably talked to Marshall Aseem Muneer more than I talked to anybody else over the last 3 months. We'd not been here without his statesmanship."
Vance also said,
"He's a military leader, he showed himself to be a great diplomat, and of course who's an amazing friend of United States Of America but is been also an important part of getting us to this point. I think is important for the American people but all over the world do appreciate. That, what brought us to this moment is the presidents leadership. There's middle east is much different 10 years to now that is was 10years ago."
‘We Love Pakistan’
Vance’s remarks about Pakistan have led to discussions in the US, especially because of the complicated history between the two countries.
Analyst Meghan McCain reacted sharply to Vance’s comments, saying she did not share the same view.
“I don't love Pakistan at all. I think of them as people who hid Osama Bin Laden. I need an explanation from the Vice President because I don't know what Vance is trying to do. I think they are enemies of America,” McCain said.
The Changing Equation
The remarks come at a time when Washington’s relationship with Islamabad is being closely watched. While Pakistan is a security partner of the US for decades the ties between the two have also faced tensions over terrorism, regional politics and strategic differences.
Although, Vance’s comments indicate a renewed focus on Pakistan’s diplomatic role, particularly in West Asian affairs, but the remarks have also reopened debate over America’s long-term policy towards Islamabad.
