Kolkata [India]: The West Bengal government has constituted a nine-member committee to examine the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, marking a key step towards the proposed implementation of a common civil law framework in the state.
The panel, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Desai, has been tasked with reviewing the provisions of the draft Bill and submitting its recommendations after a detailed examination.
Justice Desai has previously been associated with framing UCC rules in Uttarakhand and is also working on similar exercises in other states.

The committee also includes former Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy and senior administrative officials. Its report will be placed before the state cabinet before the rules are finalised.

The BJP government has indicated that it is aiming to move ahead with the UCC rollout by August. Officials said the committee will consult stakeholders before preparing its final report.
Opposition parties, including the TMC and Congress, have said they will study the draft provisions before deciding whether to support or oppose the legislation when it is introduced in the Assembly.
